How to Achieve Your Goals Without Missing a Beat

Chapter 1: Redefining Goals
Setting and achieving goals can be enjoyable and fulfilling!
For the last two years, I've struggled to meet my revenue targets in my business. This year, however, I’m determined to turn that around. In fact, I can confidently say that I won't miss my targets this year or in the years to come.
While some may argue that goals hold value regardless of whether they are met, I find that the satisfaction of achieving them is truly rewarding. Just like making a basket feels better than missing, I prefer to see my goals as targets I aim to hit.
To make my targets more attainable, I’ve broken them down into smaller, manageable goals that I can consistently achieve. Here are the three strategies I’m implementing to ensure success in 2023:
- Eliminate External Dependencies
- Embrace the Journey
- Foster Accountability
Section 1.1: Eliminate External Dependencies
Previously, my revenue targets depended on other people’s actions, which left my success out of my hands. This year, my goals are entirely within my control. My focus is on conducting six business-related experiments aimed at achieving my revenue targets and six personal experiments aimed at enhancing my family relationships.
For instance, one of my initial business experiments involved creating daily guided meditations for a week. As the sole creator, I was prepared for the possibility that no one would attend the sessions.
Section 1.2: Embrace the Journey
"The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination." — Jonathan Byrd
Byrd’s perspective resonates with the experimental mindset that I’m adopting. When the path to reaching a target isn’t clear, the unknown becomes an opportunity for exploration. This approach allows me to try various methods without the pressure of immediate success.
Whether my efforts yield positive results or not, I gain valuable insights that propel me closer to my objectives.
Chapter 2: The Power of Accountability
In the TEDx talk "If you want to achieve your goals, don't focus on them," Reggie Rivers emphasizes the importance of shifting our focus from the goal itself to the journey we undertake to get there. This aligns perfectly with my strategy of treating my goals as experiments rather than rigid endpoints.
Furthermore, having a partner to hold you accountable is essential for goal achievement. This relationship involves two key components: finding a partner and engaging in daily check-ins. If you don’t have someone to hold you accountable, reconsider setting that goal.
This dynamic isn’t just about someone checking in on you; it’s about fostering a sense of commitment to another person. This strategy has proven invaluable in making my goals feel more like a habit, thus increasing the likelihood of success.
In the video "Dallas Kicker MISSES 4 Extra Points in a PLAYOFF GAME," we see the importance of resilience and learning from failure, reinforcing the idea that setbacks are part of the journey.
Takeaway Message
By applying these three strategies, I am confident that I will accomplish my goals this year. Although I haven’t yet met my revenue target, I’ve already conducted 14 experiments by March, and I’ve enjoyed the process immensely.
Remember, everyone’s journey is unique. To simplify your goal-setting process, ask yourself: What can make achieving this goal more enjoyable and easier?
