Breaking Boundaries: Embracing the Art of Writing Freely

Chapter 1: The Freedom to Break Rules

Sometimes, breaking rules can be a positive experience.

Rule #1: Rules are meant to be challenged.

When I embarked on my writing journey, I initially focused on memorizing grammar rules before I clicked 'publish.' I aimed to recall proper sentence structure, avoiding run-on sentences. However, with every lesson I absorbed, I found myself simply writing without overthinking.

Following the guidance of fellow Medium writers, I learned to balance reading their articles, providing meaningful comments, and engaging with their work through claps and follows. I once believed that writing itself would be the most challenging aspect.

One crucial piece of advice I received was to edit thoroughly. Tools like Grammarly and platforms such as Notion and Google Docs became my allies in crafting a polished draft. Writing is not merely a haphazard task; it is a skill that requires careful cultivation.

I’ve read numerous articles from Medium authors sharing strategies to boost readership. While I have explored many suggestions (though not all), such as using short sentences, bullet points, and strategic spacing, one tip that surprised me was to save drafting the 'title' for the end.

I disregarded this advice for several reasons. Firstly, the title helped me maintain focus on my topic. Secondly, it often sparked my initial thoughts. Lastly, I found it hard to grasp the rationale for delaying the title's creation.

Of late, my drafts begin with a spontaneous thought. I write freely, then revisit my work to eliminate superfluous words or phrases. I enhance my drafts with images, bold headings, and ample white space. Is this approach flawed? I'm uncertain, but it works for me.

Advice is subjective, shaped by the experiences of both the giver and the receiver. The one offering guidance shares their insights based on personal journeys, while the recipient navigates between their own path and the advice provided. It echoes the timeless wisdom of learning from past mistakes.

I’ve tried to incorporate the valuable insights (perhaps not all) shared within the Medium community. It feels akin to being part of a circus, juggling various tips and tools to create something worth reading, worthy of applause, a follow, or a comment.

I strive to adhere to a writing schedule, as consistency is key to building an audience. While I may have strayed from my daily routine for a day and a half, I remain committed. As Derek Hughes emphasizes, the most crucial action is simply to write.

I have two precious hours dedicated to writing: one after my mother, who has dementia, goes to bed, and another early in the morning before she awakens. I must maximize these moments for writing, editing, and refining my work. I also engage with articles and comment throughout the day, as I understand the importance of connecting with potential followers.

During the editing of this piece, I encountered fresh advice from Derek Hughes aimed at enhancing "readership" in his recent article, "Give Your Writing a Flourish With These 7 Stylistic Devices." He introduced me to writing styles I was previously unaware of, such as anaphora, parallelism, and alliteration. Who knew these techniques existed? Thank you, Derek, for enlightening me!

I almost overlooked one of the most popular suggestions for monetizing my writing: launching a newsletter. The prospect of creating a distinct voice for my audience excites me. But when will I find the time? And what niche should I focus on?

This dilemma has been a persistent challenge in my writing journey—should I niche down or not? For now, I plan to set aside the concept of niche and concentrate on writing. I believe that as I express my thoughts freely, my niche will eventually reveal itself. I hope so, anyway.

Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. Feel free to clap, comment, or follow. If you have any advice for a beginner writer, I'm all ears.

Chapter 2: Embracing the Chaos

In "Shepherd, Social Club Misfits - BREAK THE RULES (PT.1) [Official Video]," the essence of challenging conventions is explored. This video captures the spirit of defiance and creativity in writing.

The second video, "BREAKING 100 RULES IN 24 HOURS!" showcases the exhilarating process of pushing boundaries and redefining norms in a fun and engaging way.
