Chapter 1: Overcoming Negative Mindsets

It's all too easy to become trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts. Our expectations and desires can lead to a mindset of scarcity, causing us to focus more on what we currently lack rather than what we truly want. This perspective can foster feelings of sadness and inadequacy, ultimately hindering our ability to manifest the life we desire.

Statistics suggest that we experience over 10,000 thoughts each day, with a staggering 80-90% of them being detrimental, depending on the source. It's remarkable that we can even function under such circumstances.

What fuels this negativity?

Our subconscious mind aims to protect us by recalling past experiences, especially those where we faced resistance or failure when stepping outside our comfort zone. Ironically, this protective instinct often prevents us from pursuing our goals.

For instance, I recently relocated to a new city brimming with opportunities to engage with nature, featuring beautiful parks and trails. Eager to buy a new bike and rediscover the joy of cycling outdoors, I began researching different models.

It had been several years since my last bike ride, and I was flooded with memories of delightful excursions along beaches, mountains, and scenic trails. However, as I browsed through bike options, my subconscious kicked into gear.

I remembered a trail ride I took in Tennessee during a business trip. I had stumbled upon a stunning wooded trail and rented a bike. The scent of evergreen trees, the lush greenery, and the sight of a paddleboard ferry gliding down the Cumberland River filled me with a sense of freedom and joy.

Fast forward to my current bike search. As I honed in on potential purchases, a memory resurfaced: my unfortunate spill during that thrilling ride. Although I didn't sustain serious injuries, I did scrape my leg on a narrow footbridge due to my excitement and speed.

This memory dampened my enthusiasm for buying a new bike. I found myself reflecting on how much time had passed since that ride, and I began to compare my past physical condition to my current one, despite the lack of any significant changes.

A seed of negativity took root, causing me to save the bike pages and postpone my purchase.

Consider a time when you had a burst of enthusiasm for trying something new. Did you act on it, or did your inner critic deter you with reminders of past failures?

These “shoulds” from your doubtful mind can be overwhelming. Thoughts like, “You got hurt last time,” or “It’s too pricey,” can quickly pile up. My therapist often advised, “Stop should-ing on yourself,” a phrase that resonates deeply. Each “I should” tends to be accompanied by feelings of shame or guilt.

Imagine if, in those moments, you paused to confront that negative thought. Ask yourself: Is this belief truly mine? Is it the best perspective for my well-being?

Taking a moment to reflect can reveal whether your thoughts are holding you back from experiences that could enhance your joy. Tune into your intuition; it might offer a more uplifting message.

Challenge your inner critic and see if you can cultivate more happiness and reduce pain. Step outside your comfort zone; it may lead to unexpected heights and opportunities.

You stand to gain much and lose little.
