“When children engage in imaginative play, they transcend reality. A simple stick transforms into a magic wand, a sock becomes a puppet, and a little one embodies a superhero.” — Fred Rogers
Anticipation: Rediscovering Childlike Wonder
Can you recall the thrill of a vacation approaching in your youth? You might have danced around your home, brimming with excitement. Consider the magic of Christmas Eve, the days leading up to your birthday, or the night before a school excursion.
In the Netherlands, the Sinterklaas celebration stands out in my memory. As a child, it felt enchanting. We placed our shoes near the chimney (a gas heater made this feasible) with a carrot or a slice of bread for Sinterklaas’ horse. Each morning, I dashed downstairs, eager to see if a gift had appeared in my shoe. Although I wasn’t always the most obedient child, I certainly listened to my parents during Sinterklaas season—otherwise, who knew if I would receive anything!
As we grow older, life may seem less magical. However, we can still find joy in anticipating delightful moments. This sense of expectation revitalizes us, filling us with enthusiasm and joy.

Brightening Your Day Through Anticipation
When do you find it easier to handle a tough day at work? Is it when the weekend is just around the corner, or when there’s a full workweek ahead? Clearly, it’s the former. Having something to look forward to can make even the roughest days more bearable.
If you know you're going to catch a movie with a close friend in the evening, the day tends to pass more swiftly. The anticipation of that enjoyable outing provides a delightful distraction, no matter how challenging your day at work may be.
Anticipating a positive event can help you navigate through tedious moments, and it feels even more rewarding when you’re already having a decent day. Concluding a good day with a fun activity is a wonderful way to enhance your mood.
“Joy is woven into the fabric of anticipation, transforming waiting into a celebration.” — Unknown
What Are You Looking Forward To?
Take a moment to compile a list of things you can look forward to right now. Think of long-term plans, such as vacations, weddings, parties, work events, or educational courses.
Also, include short-term joys like upcoming weekends, films, dining out, intimate gatherings, indulging in a good book, or visiting a spa.
Creating this list may reveal an abundance of exciting prospects on the horizon, which can uplift your spirits during difficult times. Reminding yourself of these enjoyable events can significantly improve your mood.

Infusing Your Life with More Joy
Ensure there’s always something to anticipate each day, whether large or small. If your day feels monotonous, take the initiative to plan something enjoyable.
You might book a table at a restaurant, arrange to meet a friend, or promise yourself a relaxing bath in the evening.
Aim for a balance of short-term and long-term events to look forward to. Schedule a weekend getaway a month in advance and plan a spa visit in a few weeks. Treat yourself to a movie this week and bake a cake tonight!

Mindful Anticipation
While it’s essential to have something to look forward to daily, it’s equally important to vary these experiences. Avoid rewarding yourself with the same treats every day; don’t rely solely on chocolate, games, or wine!
The goal is to enrich your zest for life, not to cultivate dependencies. Diversifying your activities and involving others can amplify the joy of shared experiences.
Reintroducing Childlike Wonder into Your Life
Eagerly anticipating something may seem juvenile, but it’s a potent way to inject excitement into your life.
Think both broadly and narrowly, ensuring enjoyable events are on the horizon. This practice will enhance your enthusiasm for life and boost your happiness every single day!
“We thrive on expectation, and whether our hopes are met or dashed, we yearn to anticipate once more.” — Samuel Johnson
