Embracing Spirituality: Transforming Anger into Peace

Chapter 1 Understanding Anger
Anger has often been my initial reaction to unexpected situations, whether it’s being taken by surprise or feeling uncomfortable. Even a simple question can trigger a flash of anger, which may fade quickly but lingers nonetheless.
In Alcoholics Anonymous, anger is prominently featured among the character defects we must confront. The Big Book highlights that fear underpins all these defects, emphasizing its significance in our personal inventory.
When I first joined the AA program, I was introduced to a more spiritual way of living. I quickly learned to discard the notion of a Higher Power as a judgmental entity, akin to a stern overseer waiting to condemn me. Instead, I was encouraged to conceive of this Higher Power in any way I preferred—most importantly, to connect with it often. This Power resides within me, not in some distant realm.
Having hit rock bottom, my only option was to rise. After several failed suicide attempts, I realized that the path of exit was no longer viable. Thus, I sought to ascend. I embraced the mantra of "fake it till you make it" and the principle of "Let Go and Let God." While it wasn't always simple, the approach proved effective for me.
How did I implement this? I began by reciting a concise version of the Third Step, simply saying, “God, help me.” Then, I allowed that Higher Power to guide me. Through reading and comprehending the Third Step, I learned to act as if it were true, which in time became genuine. This practice eventually permeated all aspects of my life, bringing clarity and relief. Only then did I fully surrender my will and life to my Higher Power, which led me to a state of happiness, joy, and freedom! Whenever I felt unsettled, revisiting the Third Step dispelled those negative feelings. If I can achieve this, so can you! Wishing you blessings on your journey!
