Exploring Amish Values: A Reflection on Technology and Community

Chapter 1: The Amish Perspective on Modernity
Years ago, I would drive past an Amish settlement on my way to college, and I thought it was utterly absurd for them to reject electricity and cars. However, reflecting on it now, I find myself questioning whether their choices were more rational than mine.
The Amish represent a traditional Christian community that actively opts out of modern advancements such as electricity and automobiles. Instead, they favor simpler, more labor-intensive approaches to farming, transportation, and daily tasks.
One of the primary reasons behind the Amish's rejection of technology is their belief that it can foster a more materialistic and individualistic culture, which contradicts their core values. They also argue that technology often distracts from essential life aspects like family and community.
Moreover, the Amish place great importance on personal interactions and see technology as a potential obstacle to forming deep, meaningful relationships. Their concern is that dependence on modern tools could erode traditional skills and knowledge vital to their way of life.
Ultimately, the Amish choose to forgo technology to uphold their traditional lifestyle and maintain their community bonds, as well as their connection to the land.
In the video titled "We Lived 50 Hours with Amish People," viewers can gain insight into the daily lives of the Amish and their unique way of living without modern conveniences.
While I’m not planning to join an Amish community anytime soon, I have reached a point in my life where I believe that the benefits of technological advancements are diminishing. In many cases, technology appears to have a negative impact on society.
What technologies do you think should have never existed?
