Finding Joy in the Little Things: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Written on

Chapter 1: A Hidden Corner for Reflection

In a world dominated by modern bookstores, I find solace in the charm of an old bookstore, where the smell of aged paper envelops me. At five feet two inches tall, a cozy stool is my perfect companion. The lighting in such spaces is not overly bright; it offers a warm, rustic ambiance, creating an ideal sanctuary for introspection.

I recently read an enlightening piece by Karen Nimmo titled "6 Signs You’re Living a Psychologically Rich Life." I can confidently say that I resonate with most of those signs about eighty-five to ninety percent of the time. I leave a small window for moments of anxiety, self-doubt, or unnecessary worries to join me for a brief chat. After all, they can sometimes teach valuable lessons.

Section 1.1: Embracing Life's Simple Pleasures

One sign from Karen's article that particularly struck me is, “I sink into the little pleasures of life.” I cherish these small joys. A walk down my favorite street fills my senses: the aroma of fried fish wafts from a nearby Malaysian restaurant, while fresh coffee brews just a few steps away. The scent of curry from an Indian café and the inviting smell of fresh bagels and pizza complete this olfactory symphony.

“To be happy you must be your own sunshine,” as C.E. Jerningham wisely said. Celebrating life's little pleasures has been a part of me since childhood. I have always been quick to fall in love with the world around me. This openness, however, has led to heartaches and moments when others perceived me as weak or overly sentimental.

My journey through these experiences has taught me to balance my affection for simple joys with caution. I often felt trapped, unable to express my delight in the world—be it stopping to admire a tree or smiling at a stranger. I believed that if I embraced my whimsical side, others would label me as childish or needy.

Ultimately, I realized that my struggles stemmed from my own perceptions. I told myself, “If I want different results, I must change my actions.” It seemed logical and responsible, but in the process, I lost touch with my authentic self. My self-esteem waned, and I found myself in an unhealthy relationship, convinced I could improve it by being someone I was not.

Chapter 2: The Bookstore Revelation

In November 1999, I stumbled upon a bookstore in New York City called Strand, famed for its slogan, “18 Miles of Books.” I walked from 125th Street to 14th Street, relishing the journey. Public transport was reserved for emergencies, and I only hailed a cab twice!

Upon entering the bookstore, I felt an overwhelming sense of wonder. I was “lost” among the shelves of books, pondering which floor to explore first. It was akin to being at a playground, weighing my options. Eventually, I gravitated towards the basement, drawn in by the scent of old books and papers. There, I found a wooden stool, a corner, and settled in with my favorite cola-flavored Gummy Bears and a Walkman, playing “Take On Me” by A-Ha. I embraced being “lost” this time.

This marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the bookstore. Each visit became a cherished routine, a refuge where I felt free and at peace. The world outside faded away, and in that quiet space, I rediscovered my joy.

The first video features Freya Ridings performing "Lost Without You" live, encapsulating the essence of finding oneself in the midst of chaos.

Section 2.1: Understanding My Journey

The moment I accepted that the issues I faced were not solely mine or those of the world, but rather how I perceived them, I began to empower myself. I learned to appreciate the small pleasures of life once more. I became content, free to express my joy through spontaneous acts like hugging trees or singing in the summer sun.

Food for Thought:

Life should not be about placing blame on others or circumstances. As a Buddhist proverb states, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." The path to self-discovery is always present, waiting for us to recognize it.

The second video features Rend Collective's "Hallelujah Anyway," a reminder to embrace joy even amidst challenges.

Section 2.2: The Dual Role of Teacher and Student

In this journey of self-discovery, you will find yourself both teaching and learning simultaneously. You teach yourself to be patient and listen to your own needs while learning to be kind to yourself. The result? Sparkles of joy that enrich your life.

“Every decision I’ve ever made was exactly the right one,” says author Liberty Forrest. This belief encapsulates the essence of growing through experience—learning while teaching and teaching while learning.
