Harnessing Money for Genuine Happiness and Fulfillment

Chapter 1: The Role of Money in Our Lives

Do you find yourself in control of your finances, or do they dictate your choices?

Visual representation of financial freedom and balance

For me, money has always been a means to an end rather than an end itself. Since late 2021, my spending on travel has exceeded what I spent in the five years before 2020 combined. The pandemic kept me grounded, but even prior to that, my travel was minimal. My focus has been on writing and developing courses since 2016, leading to just one vacation each year. However, in the last 18 months, I’ve spent about six months overseas.

Recently, I found myself calculating my expenses and thought, “Wow, I could have invested all that money for greater wealth down the line.” This analytical mindset prompted me to reflect: accumulating wealth for its own sake isn’t my ultimate aim. I consider myself financially prudent, contemplating each purchase carefully. I don’t lead an extravagant life; instead, I find joy in the little things and believe in the importance of thoughtful spending.

Yet, sometimes I can be overly cautious. I frequently remind myself: Money is merely a tool, not a destination.

Section 1.1: Utilizing Money for Enhanced Happiness

Before diving deeper, let me clarify my understanding of happiness. For me, true happiness is inner peace, a concept I’ve embraced from Stoic philosophy. It’s distinct from mere pleasure. I experience happiness when my mind is at ease and I embrace who I am.

So, how can I amplify this feeling while also achieving fulfillment? The key lies in understanding trade-offs. Since I prioritize inner peace, I strive to minimize liabilities—avoiding debt, creating multiple income streams, and continually improving my skills to remain valuable in society. My goal is independence, which requires saving aggressively. My living expenses need to be low, allowing me to retain a significant portion of my income. If I find myself spending more at any point, I make it a point to recalibrate and save again.

However, I also seek comfort. I prefer a pleasant home in a more affordable area over expensive cities or lavish locales.

The aim is to invest in experiences that genuinely enhance my happiness and fulfillment. The latter is crucial, as I believe we all yearn to contribute meaningfully to the world. True happiness, in my view, cannot stem from merely working to earn money and then hoarding it at home. We are meant to engage with life, which often entails investing our time and finances.

Section 1.2: Envisioning an Average Day

Consider what your average Wednesday in February looks like. Likely, it’s filled with the regular routines that make up the bulk of our lives. If you can ensure these ordinary days are enjoyable, you’re on the right track.

How can you leverage your finances to enhance these everyday moments? For me, it means creating a comfortable home, a productive workspace, and a welcoming exercise environment, while keeping family close. Those are my priorities, and that’s where I allocate most of my resources. Should I need to cut back on spending, I can easily do so in areas like travel, gadgets, dining out, or clothing.

The necessity of saving cannot be overstated; life is unpredictable, and health issues can arise unexpectedly. However, it's equally important not to save excessively at the expense of variety, enjoyment, and growth. As the Stoic philosopher Seneca wisely noted:

“For a life spent viewing all the variety, the majesty, the sublimity in things around us can never succumb to ennui: the feeling that one is tired of being, of existing, is usually the result of an idle and inactive leisure. Truth will never pall on someone who explores the world of nature, wearied as a person will be by the spurious things.”

Exploration adds richness to life. If we remain stagnant for too long, life can feel monotonous, and we may grow restless.

Chapter 2: Investing in Your Lifestyle

Don't hesitate to spend money to enhance your way of living, but avoid the trap of acquiring new items or fleeting experiences that provide only temporary pleasure.

Instead, focus on investing in elements that can significantly transform your lifestyle. By doing so, you will discover a deeper sense of happiness.
