On March 1, 2010, 26-year-old single mother Monica Botello brought her daughters, aged 6 and 8, to visit her ex-boyfriend Percil Carson at his home on Glastonbury Street in Detroit.
Percil had a 10-year-old son from a previous relationship and played a fatherly role to Monica's girls. Despite their breakup, they maintained a close friendship. On that evening, Percil called his mother at 7:58 PM, mentioning that the girls were watching television while Monica was present.
However, less than an hour later, two men arrived, and the mood quickly shifted. Monica took her daughters into the bathroom for safety as the men dragged Percil down to the basement.
