Discover the Amazing World of Hummingbirds and Their Secrets

Chapter 1: The Marvelous Hummingbird
As I observed this resting hummingbird, I found myself reflecting on its remarkable characteristics. Did you know that there are approximately 340 species of these birds found across North and South America? Their nests are incredibly tiny, measuring just slightly over an inch in diameter. The eggs resemble jelly beans, each measuring 2 to 3 inches long and weighing less than half an ounce. Interestingly, a hummingbird's brain constitutes about 4% of its body weight, which is quite high compared to humans, whose brains make up about 2%.
While the average lifespan in the wild is about 7 to 8 years, some have been recorded living up to 12 years. These birds need to feed every 10 to 15 minutes, consuming up to three times their body weight in a single day. Their exceptional agility is attributed to their wing structure and range of motion, with wings beating an astonishing 50 times per second. They can reach speeds of up to 37 mph and even accelerate to 60 mph during courtship dives. Remarkably, some species migrate alone, covering distances of up to 4,000 miles annually. While at rest, they take around 150 breaths per minute.
This delicate creature inspires a sense of wonder. Taking time to pause and reflect can lead to moments of awe. One intriguing fact I discovered is that the design of a hummingbird's tongue isn't like a straw; instead, it functions more like a pump. Each bird has a slender tongue that splits at the tip, opening to collect nectar, and then retracts as the bill closes, allowing the bird to lap up its food. They repeat this process 15 to 20 times every second. — Kristen Schrader
Birds and Blooms is a fantastic resource for anyone fascinated by birds.
Thank you for your attention! I encourage everyone to carve out time for rest, reflection, and the pursuit of awe.
