Chapter 1: Introduction to Juanes Montoya
In the pursuit of a career in the arts, it's not uncommon to face self-doubt. Many mornings might start with the feeling of inadequacy or questioning if you belong in this field. However, it's vital to remember that you have a purpose and that your moment will arrive. Remember, "This too shall pass."
Recently, I had the honor of interviewing the talented Juanes Montoya, a rising star affiliated with The Seeing Place Theater. Juanes hails from Medellin, Colombia, and is an alumnus of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Section 1.1: Early Life and Inspirations
Juanes, thank you for joining this interview series! Could you share a bit about your upbringing?
Thank you for having me! I was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia, as the middle child in a family of three. I spent my childhood immersed in nature, playing outdoors with friends after school. My first attempt to move to NYC was at the age of nine, but after a year, I realized I needed to return home for my happiness. Though it was tough for my mother to accept, she understood. I continued to visit her every summer until I turned 16, at which point I made another attempt to move to New York City, where I have resided ever since.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Spark for a Career in Theatre
Growing up, attending a festive Christmas musical in Medellin was a family tradition. I would come home eager to recreate the magic of the performance with my friends. Each year brought a different story, filled with vibrant music, lights, and colors that captivated me. One fateful day, after returning from NYC, I attended a performance and sat next to the grandmother of a child in the show. She shared casting information for the next season, and after two auditions and seven callbacks (with over 500 kids competing for only 15 spots), I was thrilled to join the ensemble. This experience ignited my passion for storytelling!
Section 1.2: Memorable Experiences in the Industry
Can you recount a particularly memorable experience from your career?
One standout moment was when I was cast in a sketch for SNL. After three days of intense rehearsals, the sketch was abruptly canceled just 30 minutes before the live show. I had already informed friends and family, who were eagerly waiting to watch! Although my heart sank at that moment, it taught me an invaluable lesson: everything happens for a reason, and patience is key.
Chapter 2: Lessons and Advice
What has been one of your funniest mistakes early in your career?
As a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, I once performed in a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. During a scene as Demetrius, I accidentally skipped a line and landed three pages ahead. My next line was supposed to cue another character’s entrance, and the silence that followed felt like an eternity. Thankfully, my talented co-actors improvised, bringing the performance back on track. At that moment, I wished I could disappear!
Section 2.1: Current Projects and Future Aspirations
What exciting projects are you currently involved in?
Currently, we are in the final stages of rehearsals for a new play titled The Queer Witch Conspiracy by Brandon Walker, produced by The Seeing Place Theater as part of our Ripple For Change Series. This production coincides perfectly with Pride Month! I also recently completed filming Something of Value, a feature film co-produced between NYC and the Dominican Republic, which I hope will hit theaters soon.
Section 2.2: Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Artists
Given your success in a challenging industry, what advice would you share with those who might feel intimidated by the prospect of failure?
I appreciate that you used the term "blessed." In reality, we are all blessed in various ways. My parents instilled in me the importance of following my instincts from a young age, which has guided me in chasing my dreams. This industry can be fiercely competitive and at times ungrateful, but if you feel a calling deep within, persist! The worst that can happen is that you’ll meet diverse, wonderful individuals along the journey.
We also value diversity in entertainment. Can you share three reasons why it's crucial to represent different voices in film and television, and how this can influence culture?
- Our primary role is to amplify voices that often go unheard. That’s why I chose this path – to share stories of individuals who mirror my experiences.
- To reshape society, mainstream media must reflect the narratives of people from all backgrounds, affirming that their stories are significant.
- Every person deserves to see themselves represented in the arts. We all yearn for relatable stories that resonate with our experiences.
Section 2.3: Five Essential Lessons for Newcomers
What are your top five lessons you wish you had known at the start of your career?
- Perform your best and then let it go; art has its own journey.
- Don’t take rejection personally; many factors influencing casting are beyond your control.
- Forge friendships in diverse fields; they can provide grounding when this industry feels overwhelming.
- Some days will bring feelings of inadequacy, but trust that you're on the right path and that your time will come. "This too shall pass."
- Trust your gut; your instincts are often spot on!
Section 2.4: Tips for Avoiding Burnout
What strategies would you suggest to your peers to help them thrive and prevent burnout?
I’m actively seeking advice in this area as well! Recently, I’ve been dedicating time to meditate, even if just for a few minutes. Taking a moment to breathe and quiet your mind can transform your day. It’s easier said than done, but it’s worth trying.
Chapter 3: Creating Meaningful Connections
If you could initiate a movement to benefit as many people as possible, what would it entail?
I envision a movement where people spend time with their elders, documenting their life stories. Our loved ones hold incredible tales, and it’s essential to preserve those narratives for future generations. Every household should have a shared notebook filled with cherished anecdotes.
Is there someone specific you’re grateful for who has helped you along your journey?
I owe much to my parents, who first encouraged my dream of acting. Their unwavering support has been vital. Additionally, my aunt Ana played a crucial role in my development, driving me to rehearsals daily while I worked on a musical, despite living an hour away. Her dedication allowed me to chase my dreams and create unforgettable memories. I hope to reciprocate that love and support one day.
What’s your favorite life lesson quote, and how has it impacted you?
I recently encountered a quote that said, "Promise me you did everything you could with that life you had." This phrase resonates deeply, reminding me that we have one life to live, and I’m committed to pursuing experiences that nourish my heart and soul.
If you could have a private meal with anyone, who would it be and why?
I would love to share a meal with Ava DuVernay. I deeply admire her work and am intrigued by how her storytelling effectively highlights social and racial justice issues.
