Navigating the Challenges of Online Reading and Mental Health

Written on

The Journey of a Lifelong Reader

I have been immersed in the world of books since I was three years old. My mother would often recount how, even before starting kindergarten, I could read. One particular memory stands out: while she was driving, I spotted a road sign and quietly announced from the backseat, “Stop ahead.” Although she had been teaching me letters and basic words, my ability to read in that moment took her by surprise. This prompted regular visits to our local library, where my love for reading flourished, leading me to check out the maximum of twenty books each visit.

As I near my 50th birthday in just a few months, I find myself feeling increasingly fatigued by reading. The content I encounter has become overwhelmingly disheartening. The world news is often grim, and the rampant ignorance I observe on social media can be infuriating.

At times, I wish I could turn off my ability to read—or even better, that I were blind. I realize this may sound extreme, but there are moments when the weight of current events feels too heavy for my mental well-being. The continuous cycle of war, racism, and intolerance can be incredibly toxic. I recognize that perhaps I should not indulge in the daily news as I do.

However, I find it hard to resist keeping up with Donald Trump’s legal troubles, as he has managed to evade accountability for far too long. I often find myself drawn to articles detailing his latest controversial statements. It’s akin to flipping through sensational tabloids while waiting in a grocery line; I know I shouldn’t, yet I do. It’s frustrating to let his offensive remarks affect me as deeply as they do, but I am hopeful that justice will eventually catch up with him.

The Influence of Online Comments

The stress induced by reading Trump’s comments and the subsequent reactions from online trolls and supporters of his views is detrimental to my health. I should probably consider abstaining from the comments sections altogether, as they often consist of nothing but vitriol and bigotry. It’s become increasingly rare to find uplifting stories amidst the negativity that floods social media.

While platforms like Medium occasionally offer a reprieve with positive and engaging writing, I still encounter pieces that leave me puzzled or disheartened. Occasionally, I find myself responding to unkind comments, even though I know that ignoring them would be wiser. I have learned to delete these comments more often, as engagement does benefit us writers financially, but I must remember to focus on the constructive interactions.

The comments sections of political or religious articles reveal the dismal state of public discourse today, making it clear that respectful debate is hard to come by. I’d be better off avoiding this part of social media altogether, especially since I have yet to successfully change the viewpoint of anyone from a staunch conservative stance.

If I were to wake up one day devoid of the ability to read, I suspect I would feel a sense of relief. My blood pressure might decrease, allowing me to engage more in real-life activities that bring me joy, such as photography. I would relish the opportunity to spend more time outdoors.

However, relinquishing my reading skills would also mean losing the ability to write, an outlet that has brought me immense joy over the past two and a half years. I cherish the banter with my readers and friends online, and it would be a significant loss not to engage with the witty and clever individuals I’ve connected with through social media.

Finding Balance in Reading Choices

It’s crucial for me to appreciate my reading abilities and be discerning about what I consume. Being an active reader has enriched my life in countless ways, and I will never regret the knowledge I’ve gained as an informed citizen. I aim to redirect my focus toward topics that entertain and uplift me while steering clear of distressing news and hateful comments.

Understanding the world around us is important, yet I can remain informed without subjecting myself to the negative experiences I’ve had over the past several years, particularly during Trump’s tumultuous influence on our society. By changing my habits and avoiding detrimental online spaces, I can foster a healthier mental state.

I am actively working on reducing my screen time, opting for outdoor activities, photography, and engaging writing experiences. Interacting with the vibrant community on Medium continues to bring me happiness.

Thank you for being a source of positivity in an often gloomy world. I genuinely appreciate the uplifting comments and articles you all contribute, which remind me of the value of reading and connection.
