Lessons Learned in Navigating IoT Development During a Global Crisis

Written on

Chapter 1: The Startup Struggle

The COVID-19 pandemic nearly led to the closure of our startup. We witnessed many others fail during this tumultuous time. The reality of being a startup founder is filled with sacrifices from the entire team. The entrepreneurial journey is often a wild ride, characterized by unexpected challenges and emotional highs and lows where success and setbacks are intertwined.

Innovative IoT solutions for seniors

Promising Product, Yet Inopportune Timing

Our narrative began with a bright idea to create an IoT solution named Raqib, designed to enhance the safety and welfare of the elderly. We recognized a significant market opportunity as populations aged globally. However, the initial market response was tepid, leaving us feeling disheartened and prompting a reassessment of our target demographic.

Chapter 2: A Shift in Focus

With renewed optimism, we decided to pivot our focus to the safety and health of pilgrims during Umrah and Hajj. While the core of our product remained unchanged, it now aimed to provide comfort to those on their sacred journeys. Early trials in 2018 and 2019 showed promising feedback, and we even integrated a roaming SIM card feature to ease the transition for users traveling from their home countries to Mecca.

However, the landscape shifted dramatically in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic brought international travel to a standstill.

The Impact of Limited Mobility

Our product, which depended on the mobility of pilgrims, faced significant obstacles as travel restrictions persisted into 2021. As the world began to open up again in 2022, we were confronted with the harsh reality that our product required more resources than we could afford to remain relevant. The financial implications of necessary hardware upgrades and additional research proved overwhelming, leading us to the painful decision to halt our cherished project.

This challenging period ultimately became a pivotal moment for us. We dedicated ourselves to diversifying our projects and exploring new revenue streams. Reflecting on this journey, we realize that the adversity we faced spurred our growth and adaptation.

Chapter 3: Lessons in Adaptability

Numerous external factors beyond our control played vital roles in our journey, with timing being a critical influence. Yet, this experience highlighted our adaptability and resilience as startup founders.

As we look forward, we carry the valuable lessons learned from this journey:

  1. Timing is a critical aspect in the startup world, but resilience is essential for overcoming challenges.
  2. Flexibility is vital when external conditions shift dramatically.
  3. Diversifying projects can serve as a lifeline in turbulent times.
  4. Every challenge offers a lesson, and each setback can create new pathways for growth and opportunity.
