Redefining Success: What Does It Mean for You?
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Personal Success
What barriers are preventing you from becoming the best version of yourself?
Spoiler: It might not be what you assume.
To rephrase slightly — what obstacles are hindering your success?
Many of us traverse life feeling a sense of unease, a vague discontent, and an incessant yearning.
But what exactly are we yearning for?
More.
But more of what?
And why?
This is where the root of our discomfort lies.
Often, we lack clarity on these vital questions.
While we might have answers, they are typically rooted in societal standards of success.
So today, I pose this question:
If you could silence external influences and concentrate on your own intuition, what would success resemble for you?
Without a clear definition, how can we identify what to pursue or recognize what "more" truly entails?
It's also important to note that our understanding of success is heavily influenced by the culture and society in which we are raised.
How can you go about defining and pursuing success on your own terms?
Here are some strategies that might assist you:
Section 1.1: Delve Deeper into Yourself
Do you truly know who you are?
Are you aware of your core values in relation to various aspects of your life?
What motivates you?
If asked, could you clearly articulate both your strengths and weaknesses?
These factors play a crucial role in determining not only your actions but also the way you wish to navigate through life.
Once you have a profound understanding of these elements, you will have a clearer vision of what success feels and looks like for you.
Subsection 1.1.1: Exploring Success Beyond Career
Success is often narrowly defined by career achievements.
When was the last time you contemplated success in the context of personal relationships?
Rather than focusing on what you desire in an ideal partner, think about what a thriving partnership would mean for you.
Do you even aspire to a traditional partnership?
Perhaps a solo polyamorous lifestyle suits you better, or maybe a committed monogamous relationship.
What feelings does a successful relationship evoke in you?
What would successful parenting entail?
Is it about the end result or the journey itself?
Would a smooth adolescence for your children redefine success?
Or perhaps you envision your kids always choosing to celebrate holidays at your home?
Identify what brings you joy and ignites your passions.
Are those interests prioritized in your life?
Would engaging in those passions be a measure of success for you?
How would you like to integrate those passions into your daily routine?
Consider the lifestyle you wish to cultivate, your vision for work-life balance, how you want to spend your leisure time, and the company you'd like to keep.
Reflecting on these dimensions may lead you to reevaluate your definitions of success.
Section 1.2: Taking Action Towards Your Dreams
Be audacious in your aspirations.
But don’t stop there.
Actively pursue those dreams to turn them into reality.
This pursuit itself can be viewed as a form of success, regardless of the final outcome.
Traveling the path you’ve chosen may represent success more than the destination itself.
This perspective shifts the paradigm.
Don’t undertake this journey alone.
Seek support and consider working with a coach — your chances of staying on track significantly increase when you have the right guidance.
In answering my initial question, it appears that the main thing standing in the way of you becoming your best self is a lack of clarity about what that looks like for you.
What do you think, friend? Have you defined success on your own terms?
