Understanding the Art of Knowing When to Let Go

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Quitting
Recently, I watched a video by Ali Abdaal reflecting on his learnings from 2021. One insightful takeaway was a quitting framework derived from the book Happy Sexy Millionaire by Steven Bartlett. Many people grapple with the question of whether to quit something, pondering, “Should I really let this go?” or “What impact will this decision have on my life?” If you're uncertain about quitting, this framework could provide the clarity you need.
The framework consists of a series of questions designed to guide your decision-making process. The first inquiry is, “Are you considering quitting?” If you answer “No,” then enjoy your current activity without further thought. However, if the response is “Yes,” the next question becomes, “What prompts your desire to quit?” Common responses might be “It’s Just Hard” or “It Sucks.”
If you identified your reason as “It’s Just Hard,” the subsequent question to reflect on is, “Is the challenge worth the potential reward?” A “Yes” answer suggests that the potential benefits are worth the struggle, so you should persist. Conversely, a “No” indicates it may be time to move on.
On the other hand, if your reason for contemplating quitting is “It Sucks,” you should ask yourself, “Do you think you could change it to be more enjoyable?” If the answer is “No,” quitting is a viable option. However, if the answer is “Yes,” the next question is, “Is the effort required to improve it worthwhile?” If you believe it is, then continue; if not, consider letting it go.
This framework is an excellent tool for clarifying your thoughts around quitting, ensuring you thoroughly assess your situation before making a decision. A visual representation of the framework is included below.
