Chapter 1: The Challenge of the Long Run
Today marked my scheduled long-distance run, but this one was special as it hit the double-digit mark in mileage! I’ve been intensely preparing for the upcoming Goodyear Half Marathon, and I realized that running 10 miles was essential training for the full 13.1 miles next month.
The Run Experience
While I won’t dive into every minute detail of my run, such as blood oxygen levels or precise route coordinates, I will share the essence of my experience.
It was a warm day, but not excessively hot, although the humidity was significant. The most challenging segments were definitely between miles 2 and 4, where my body was still acclimating to the exertion and the initial thrill had faded.
After reaching mile 5, things began to look up! I completed 10.27 miles in 1 hour and 44 minutes. Not too shabby for my inaugural ten-miler! An added bonus was that I maintained a steady pace without taking a single walking break throughout the entire run.
Given the increased mileage, I intentionally slowed my pace to around 10:10 per mile—completely unplanned. However, crossing the finish line at mile 10 felt exhilarating after almost two hours of looping through my neighborhood.
This experience reassured me that running the half marathon next month is achievable, even if it will be a mental battle. Plus, there's something satisfying about sharing with everyone nearby that I just ran 10 miles—that’s definitely the highlight!
