The Challenge of Living in the Present: Is It Possible?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Presence

In today's world, many speakers are capitalizing on an age-old adage:

"Want happiness? Live in the moment!" But how many motivational speakers simply echo their predecessors? This trend is becoming absurd. Naturally, one would wish to be present in the moment; after all, it’s the only moment we have, right?

Imagine someone saying, "I dislike this moment, let me step into her moment instead," as if trading places with someone enjoying a fine vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Living in the moment

And what about those neighbors with their extravagant Olympic-sized pool while I’m stuck sweating in my small space? If only I could swap moments with them!

Reflecting on past experiences can also be frustrating. A week ago, the pain I felt was less intense before a clumsy chiropractor walked over my back like it was a mountain trail. I long for those days.

It’s astonishing how easily people can be influenced. GQ tells us to buy Cesaro Paciotti underwear, and suddenly, we’re lining up for the last pair at Monsieur Brunold.

Influencing consumer behavior

"Girls, live in the moment! There's a once-in-a-lifetime sale at VS!" If that’s not seizing the moment, what is? Yet, we end up spending over $599 for a ribbon and a box, while the actual item is so minuscule it requires a microscope to see. But, of course, you’ll wear it that night to impress someone you met at Men of Sapphire.

Are these so-called enlightened individuals truly living in this world? We exist in a society filled with distractions, where many struggle to focus on anything longer than a few moments. The average attention span has been recorded at a mere 10 milliseconds.

We often wander from one room to another, completely forgetting our purpose. Retracing our steps, we ask ourselves, "What was I even doing?"

Yes, guilty as charged! If we could simply master the art of living in the now, such forgetfulness would become obsolete.

They preach to forget the past and ignore the future, insisting that the latter is merely a figment of our imagination. It's a bad habit to dwell on illusions. We are urged to embrace our current reality, no matter how unpleasant it may be.

The truth is, even if our present circumstances are challenging, everything else could be worse. Embrace the harshness of your present, or risk facing the depths of despair.

In ancient times, being hyper-aware was a survival instinct. Our ancestors needed to be acutely tuned in to their surroundings, or risk becoming prey to predators. Their fight-or-flight responses were so finely tuned that nothing escaped their notice. If that’s not living in the moment, I don’t know what is.

Survival instincts in ancient times

Fast forward to the 21st century, and we find ourselves relying on books to remind us of what was once second nature. Our absent-mindedness is so profound that we might forget our own middle names.

We might start reading a book (remember those?), but after forty-five minutes, we’re still stuck on page 2. Companies like Apple and Samsung thrive on our impulse purchases, often based on a friend's recommendation or a glowing online review. Meanwhile, our "old" devices languish in drawers, lost to history.

If we were born without thumbs, those tech giants would be out of business. Bluetooth technology would reign supreme.

Expressions like "Oh, I forgot!" should no longer be acceptable excuses. The same goes for "I got distracted" and "Where was I?"

Imagine getting married, and in the midst of the ceremony, the groom exclaims, "Look, a red squirrel!" Tax day approaches, and despite countless reminders plastered everywhere, we still manage to forget. That’s why we put it in our calendars—just in case.

We rarely inhabit the present, and we often fail to finish reading the very books that advise us to do so. The only time we might truly be in the moment is during high-pressure situations, like a basketball game when the clock winds down—especially if there's money riding on it (not that your spouse knows).

The mind often drifts where it pleases. You could hire coaches, mentors, or meditation instructors, yet the mind keeps wandering off, unbothered.

The only true escape from this mental chaos? Sleep. It’s the ultimate solution to finding the Here and Now.

Finding peace in sleep

Mindy Kaling once articulated it beautifully: “There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.” Those words resonate with a powerful truth.

Chapter 2: Exploring Altered States of Consciousness

In the quest for understanding our consciousness, we often overlook the profound insights that can arise from altered states.

In this episode of the Here and Now Podcast, Ram Dass delves into the intricacies of altered states and their significance in our lives.

Chapter 3: Integrating Different Realities

Furthermore, the integration of various planes of reality is crucial for a holistic understanding of our existence.

In this enlightening discussion, Ram Dass explores how we can weave together our experiences across different dimensions of reality.
