# Embracing Authenticity: Who Am I Beyond Society's Expectations?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery

We all experience moments in life when we contemplate our true identity. Reflecting on my teenage years, I remember grappling with this question myself. Yet, during that time, my indulgence in alcohol and drugs prevented me from engaging with it meaningfully, leaving me without answers.

Now, as I approach my thirty-sixth birthday, a significant transformation has occurred. My journey has taken me from a young man lost in substance use to someone who has maintained sobriety for over six years. I have evolved from disregarding the value of life to actively seeking to embrace all that it offers. The transformation is profound: I have shifted from causing harm to consciously contributing positively to the world around me.

Even at this stage in my life, the inquiry “Who am I?” remains unanswered. However, I have experienced a significant change in perspective. A recent conversation sparked this realization, compelling me to share it with you.

During this discussion, someone posed the question, “Who am I, really?” as tears fell from her eyes. This prompted me to ask, “Why is it essential for you to be someone?” The response was silence, a profound moment of reflection.

Isn’t simply ‘being’ sufficient? Isn’t that the essence of our existence? The urge to define ourselves is often driven by our ego—the incessant voice in our minds. Our names do not encapsulate our essence; they merely signify how we are labeled. The diplomas we earn—or don’t earn—are merely indicators of knowledge gained, not markers of our worth. Similarly, our job titles serve only to describe our roles, not who we are at our core.

You don’t need to conform to any identity. Just exist.

The notion that one must embody a specific persona is deeply embedded in our culture. There’s a prevailing belief that we are inadequate unless we meet certain societal standards. This pressure can stem from family, friends, and colleagues who perceive their worth through material success or social status. And let’s not forget the influence of social media.

On these platforms, we witness countless individuals striving to present themselves as ‘something’ or ‘someone.’ They curate an idealized version of life, often disconnected from reality. Many even go to great lengths to fabricate their existence, sharing trivialities while shunning authenticity, often hiding behind filters.

The pursuit of validation and attention drives many social media users. The quest for likes and comments can lead to extreme behaviors, sometimes with tragic outcomes. All this effort—what is it truly for?

What are we doing, dear friends? Recognize that this obsession revolves around your ego. At the very least, strive to acknowledge this truth. Take a moment to sit with yourself and confront your reality honestly. Engage in self-inquiry and ask yourself the essential questions.

Awaken to your true self.

Instead of asking who you are, consider why you feel the need to be someone.
