Seven Timeless Lessons My Parents Taught Me That Jesus Would Appreciate
Written on
Chapter 1: The Wisdom of Gratitude
As I grow older, I find myself increasingly grateful for the lessons instilled in me by my parents. Their teachings often came from their actions rather than just words, and I believe these lessons resonate with the values Jesus upheld.
1. Expressing Gratitude
When Jesus healed ten lepers, only one— a Samaritan— returned to express gratitude. Jesus acknowledged this act, highlighting its importance (Luke 17:15–19). Regardless of our background, saying "thank you" honors the spirit of appreciation.
2. Taking Responsibility for Mistakes
Jesus taught that if you remember someone has an issue with you while offering your gift at the altar, you should first seek reconciliation (Matt. 5:23–24). He emphasized the importance of settling disputes before they escalate, encouraging accountability and the courage to apologize (Matt. 5:25–26).
3. The Value of Punctuality
Jesus exemplified perfect timing, healing many in a single day (Mark 5). Arriving on time respects others and signals that you value their time as much as your own.
4. Kindness to Strangers
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus highlighted the importance of compassion towards those we do not know (Luke 10:25-37). God's commands repeatedly encourage kindness to strangers, reminding us of our shared humanity and the potential impact of our kindness (Exod. 22:21).
5. Listening with Intent
Jesus often withdrew to listen for God’s voice (Mt. 14:13). His ability to discern thoughts was not supernatural; rather, it stemmed from his keen awareness of body language and emotional cues (Heb. 4:15). Listening attentively fosters deeper connections.
6. The Importance of Names
When Jesus called Zacchaeus by name, he demonstrated the significance of recognizing individuals (Luke 19:5). Remembering names shows genuine interest and respect, enhancing relationships.
7. Simple Acts of Kindness
Paul noted that God showed kindness through Jesus (Eph. 2:7). Holding doors for others is a small yet impactful gesture that reflects kindness. In a world often focused on self, such simple actions can make a significant difference.
These lessons may seem traditional, yet I believe they are timeless principles that Jesus would advocate. Wishing you blessings as you earnestly seek to follow his example!
