Embracing Change: Why Quitting Isn't a Failure
Written on
Understanding the Stigma Around Quitting
I’ve grown weary of the negative perception surrounding failure. Recently, I came across a tweet that lamented the unfortunate fate of a freelancer returning to a traditional office job, labeling it as giving up. However, I hold a contrasting viewpoint.
The Reality of Change
I have encountered my fair share of setbacks throughout my life. In fact, embracing the idea of giving up has become something of a specialty for me! While change can be daunting, it also brings empowerment. Often, change is not just desired but essential.
For instance, three years back, I made the decision to leave my role as a 911 operator. Although I aimed to keep that job due to its lucrative pay—twice what I had earned before—it simply wasn’t a fit. Admittedly, I chose to leave even before completing the training, knowing I wouldn’t pass the final evaluations. It was a tough decision, and I shed many tears over it. Yet, I recognized it was the right choice for me at that time. Quitting should not be viewed as a failure; rather, it symbolizes personal growth and learning.
The importance of learning from failures is evident in my journey. Had I not left that job or ended a long-term relationship that became toxic, I would not be where I am today. I would still be trapped under the influence of someone who belittled my worth to maintain control.
The Challenges of Freelancing
It's important to note that freelancing comes with its own set of challenges. While I find joy in certain aspects of my current lifestyle, I also face difficulties. Running a business, managing taxes, handling paperwork, networking, and performing the actual copywriting tasks can be exhausting. I’ve transitioned between various toxic marketing agencies while juggling my freelance work.
Over the years, I've frequently contemplated abandoning my freelancing career to return to a stable office job in customer service, bartending, or even mundane data entry. However, I’ve come to realize that failure is not inherently negative. Each setback has imparted valuable lessons and provided me the space to reflect and explore new opportunities. Now, I find myself yearning for change! Freelancing has been fulfilling, but I can envision a future where I might happily return to an office job.
Conclusion: The Value of Change and Failure
Change is a natural part of life, and failure is merely a stepping stone on the path to success. If you encounter critics on social media shaming you for making choices that suit your needs, remember to disregard them. Each of us has better pursuits to focus on.
