# Embracing Women in Tech: My Journey and Insights

Chapter 1: My Early Aspirations

Reflecting on my life over 15 years ago, I vividly remember graduating from secondary school at 18. After completing my final exams, I was clear about my career path. Our school introduced its inaugural computer science class in 10th grade, which was an elective alongside my core subjects. Given my aptitude for mathematics and enthusiasm for technical topics, I eagerly participated in these classes until graduation. I consistently excelled, earning top marks and deepening my passion for IT. I became proficient in Assembler and Visual Basic, fueling my desire to pursue a degree in computer science.

Initially, I had considered a career linked to languages due to my love for learning about different cultures. However, I discovered my ideal program: International Business Information Technology. This dual-study program involved both academic study and practical experience within a company. It combined a significant amount of IT with business principles and intercultural communication, all partially taught in English, including advanced mathematics and machine learning. As a German, this presented its challenges, yet I thrived on them, even taking extra Spanish classes.

My Choice and the Initial Challenges

Before applying to the most prestigious IT company for this dual study, I carefully contemplated my future. With only ten spots available and hundreds of applicants, the competition was fierce. My then-boyfriend dismissed my ambition, suggesting it was foolish to pursue a career in IT simply because I was a woman. He believed I should aspire to be a teacher, raise children, and manage the household, as he thought IT was a male-dominated field.

To those men clinging to outdated views: times are changing! Women are stepping into professions they love and excel in, independent of male validation. I aimed to become an IT consultant post-studies, and my application was successful—I was invited for an interview!

My excellent performance in computer science, along with outstanding grades in mathematics, German, English, and French, set me apart. My genuine interest in IT and ability to discuss my hobbies in French impressed the interviewers, ultimately securing my position. I was overjoyed! However, my ex-boyfriend dismissed my success as luck or claimed I must have used charm to get ahead.

Celebrating success in a male-dominated field

His skepticism saddened me, especially since I had worked hard for my achievements. Throughout my studies, he continued to undermine my efforts, suggesting I was fortunate or had cheated my way through. He struggled to accept that I chose a career traditionally viewed as male-dominated.

During my time abroad for a semester, I had numerous opportunities to work on projects and write papers in various countries. Yet, he frequently criticized my choices, deeming them unworthy or inconvenient for him. Ultimately, I chose to pursue what excited me most: developing software for an EU-funded project, which turned out to be one of my best experiences. Ironically, he never visited, citing inconvenience, even though it was a short flight away.

A Tough Start

As I shared in my “About Me” section, I am dedicated to solving IT challenges. Despite facing a rocky start and encountering stereotypes from older colleagues who believed women should focus on domestic roles rather than programming, I persevered. Unfortunately, many still trivialize workplace harassment, mistaking it for harmless flirtation.

I began my career 22 years after obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree at a small firm specializing in IT consulting for major German and international clients. Being young and female, I faced unwanted advances from some clients. I have recounted instances of sexual harassment I encountered during my studies and career, including derogatory comments that were both shocking and demeaning.

My Growth with Setbacks

A few years ago, my supervisor and project manager suddenly fell ill and was absent indefinitely. With no formal handover, I quickly stepped into the role of overall project manager, overseeing various projects and becoming the primary contact for our client. This experience, though challenging, helped me grow significantly.

I was nearing burnout due to the demands placed on me but recognized the need for help. I took time to focus on self-care and sought assistance. Through this journey, I not only managed my professional responsibilities but also earned promotions and continued to advance in my career. I am grateful for the lessons learned during this period, even if they came at a high cost.

My Life Today

Today, I serve as a Senior IT Consultant and am the go-to contact for numerous clients, including some of those traditionalists in the industry. I have faced numerous challenges but have proven my competence in this field. Women in tech are increasingly visible, and that’s a positive development!
