Essential Apps for Productivity
When working on my MacBook Pro, I strive to maintain a streamlined digital workspace, which helps me concentrate better on my tasks. This often means closing any applications that aren't in use to conserve desktop space and memory. However, there are five applications that I rely on daily, regardless of the type of work I’m doing. These tools are the foundation of my productivity, and I’d like to highlight them here.
In alphabetical order, these essential apps include:
Alfred
Alfred is a powerful launcher app that has significantly increased my efficiency over the past year. With a simple keyboard shortcut (Option + Spacebar), I can quickly open applications, search for files (both local and online), perform calculations, and manage my web browsing—all without needing to use the mouse.
Using Option + Spacebar followed by a command has become second nature for me. It undoubtedly saves me hours each month, as I no longer have to disrupt my focus to grab my mouse, open another app, and return to my previous task. If I were to get a new laptop, Alfred would be the very first app I install.
Dashlane
About four years ago, I made the mistake of using the same password across all my accounts, which led to a harrowing experience when I was hacked. An unauthorized person accessed my personal email, which then gave them access to my work email and other accounts, resulting in my being locked out of everything. The lesson learned is to use a password manager that generates unique and complex passwords for every site. I rely on Dashlane, which I keep open at all times for quick and easy logins to various accounts.
Fantastical
Though I don't keep the full Fantastical app open on my screen at all times—since that would take up unnecessary space—I do use its menu bar feature to stay updated on my daily schedule. This allows me to view my upcoming meetings and how much time I have until each one starts. Additionally, if a meeting is on a platform like Zoom, I can directly join with a click, without having to dig through my full calendar.
Obsidian
My preferred note-taking tool is Obsidian, which I use to jot down useful information and keep track of meetings. This way, I maintain an archive of conversations with clients and any agreed-upon actions. Obsidian remains open throughout my workday, allowing me to quickly jot down notes whenever necessary. I also have a series of templates that I can easily use with just a couple of keystrokes, which helps keep my notes organized.
Things3
Things3 is another app that helps me stay organized. I previously wrote about how I utilize Focus Modes on my iOS devices, including a "Work" Focus Mode during my working hours on my iPad. This mode features several Things3 widgets that display my daily tasks and goals, ensuring I'm focused on what I need to accomplish throughout the day. While I could place these widgets on my MacBook, I prefer the cleaner look on iOS and position my iPad under my monitor for easier access.
