Exploring the Duality of Creative Expression on Medium

Written on

Chapter 1: Stepping Beyond Familiar Boundaries

Medium has significantly encouraged me to break free from my comfort zone. Prior to joining this platform, I was misled by the notion that stories should be approximately 1,000 words long. Perhaps this misconception stemmed from my background in writing for newsletters and academic journals.

Now, thanks to Medium, I am delving into various forms of writing, embracing the spectrum of creative expression by exploring both poetry and short stories.

Section 1.1: The Joy of Poetry

Writing poetry has become a thrilling experience for me. The challenge of crafting verses within a time limit adds an exhilarating twist, making the process even more enjoyable. The effort to discover the perfect words that convey my emotions, while also incorporating rhyme, is immensely fulfilling.

Here are three of my poems:

Subsection 1.1.1: My First Short Story

My inaugural short story, titled "Lost and Alone, and Only a Beach for a Bed," unfolds in three segments. It narrates the journey of a man who abandons his family and past to embark on a quest for self-discovery and redemption. With only a beach for a resting place, he braves the elements at night, ultimately finding companionship with two individuals along his path.

The finale, set to be released in August, will reveal the unexpected outcomes of his journey. You can read the first two installments here:

I aspire to develop this narrative further and transform it into my first complete short story.

Section 1.2: The Safe Haven of Medium

One of the remarkable aspects of Medium is its supportive environment for writers to experiment and explore new ideas. After all, isn’t variety what makes life interesting?

Thank you, Medium!

Until next time, I appreciate your readership,

Calvin
