Harnessing Surfer for Effective Contour Map Generation
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Contour Mapping with Surfer
In this article, we will explore the process of utilizing Surfer, a powerful mapping software, to create contour maps. Even with the free demo version of Surfer, users can witness the software's capabilities when producing these intricate maps. Crafting contour maps manually can be time-consuming and often lacks the precision that software can offer.
Using Surfer allows for the generation of detailed contour maps instead of simplistic sketches that merely estimate ore distribution, which proves advantageous in various practical applications. Additionally, advanced mathematical techniques such as Kriging can be employed, enabling users to achieve results in a fraction of the time it would take for manual mapping.
To illustrate the effectiveness of different methods, we present maps derived from three distinct techniques: Triangulation, Inverse Square Distance, and Kriging. For the Kriging map, a variogram was developed to establish a correlation within the data.
Section 1.1: Comparing Mapping Techniques
As demonstrated in the resulting maps, Kriging yielded the most accurate representation, even though the variogram constructed may not have been optimal. Following Kriging, the Inverse Square Law provided decent results, while Triangulation was the least precise. This analysis suggests that with the appropriate tools and skilled personnel, Kriging should be the preferred method for reserve estimation in mining operations. Utilizing Kriging can lead to significant cost savings or increased profits, which is crucial for success in the industry.
