Reviving the DeLorean: An Electric Future Awaits

The DeLorean's Journey: From Icon to Electric Revival

The legendary DeLorean, made famous by the Back to the Future film series, is poised for a remarkable revival. Once a fleeting trend of the 1980s, this automotive gem has remained a symbol of innovation and nostalgia. A recent announcement revealed that a new all-electric model of the DeLorean is set to debut later this year, breathing new life into this classic vehicle.

Originally manufactured between 1981 and 1983 by John DeLorean’s company, this two-seater sports car was instantly recognizable for its distinctive upward-opening doors. Unfortunately, production was cut short due to various design flaws, leading to bankruptcy after approximately 9,000 cars were produced. Remarkably, around 6,500 of these vehicles still survive today, largely thanks to their cinematic fame in the Michael J. Fox trilogy.

In 1995, the current DeLorean Motor Company was established in Texas by British mechanic Stephen Wynne, who managed to acquire the remnants of the original company, including its iconic trademark.

As we approach four decades since the last DeLorean rolled off the assembly line, a new chapter is about to begin. According to Robb Report’s Kyle Schnitzer, an electric version of this classic car will make its debut at the prestigious Monterey Car Week’s Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach later this year, as reported by Car and Driver.

The event will serve as a platform to showcase the DeLorean for a new generation. The company has confirmed plans to reintroduce the vehicle through a commercial aired during the Super Bowl and a video shared on their Twitter account.

The upcoming model is expected to have a range of at least 300 miles on a single charge and might be named the EVolved, based on insights from Autoevolution.

Innovative Features and Design Evolution

DeLorean CMO Troy Beetz emphasized that this new model will not simply be a retro vehicle powered by electricity. He stated in an email that the new DeLorean “will most certainly not be a one-to-one with the 1980s vehicle… This is a true luxury vehicle that is high-tech.” However, the signature door design from the original will remain intact.

Beetz further explained to Car and Driver that the design of the upcoming model aims to give the impression that it has evolved over the past 40 years, integrating modern aesthetics while respecting its heritage.

DeLorean’s CEO, Joost de Vries, brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at Volvo and Tesla. He emphasized that the new DeLorean is not intended to be a mere collector's item but is aimed at “people who want to drive.”

While the exact number of vehicles in the initial production run remains uncertain, it is likely to be limited. The Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, enacted in 2015, allows smaller manufacturers to produce up to 325 vehicles annually without adhering to contemporary safety standards.

The DeLorean Motor Company is currently a private entity, but if the reintroduction of this 1980s classic as an electric vehicle proves successful, it could pave the way for exciting developments in the future.
