Striving for Excellence: Insights on Mastery and Life

Chapter 1: The Importance of Aiming High
Many people fail to recognize the immense value of setting lofty goals. While I understand that a life dedicated to constant improvement can feel exhausting, striving for mastery in your field is perhaps the most significant pursuit you can undertake.
To start, let’s clarify what we mean by “the best.”
What does "the best" truly mean?
When we discuss being "the best," it might not align with your initial thoughts. Entrepreneur and author Seth Godin offers a compelling perspective on this concept:
“Best means: best for them, right now, based on what they believe and what they know. It refers to their world, the context they operate in.” — Seth Godin, The Dip
You don’t need to aspire to be the next Michael Jordan or a global icon. Instead, focus on being the "best" in your domain for the audience that matters to you. The simplest way to achieve this is through continuous self-improvement and mastering your craft.
You may have noticed that I use "mastery" and "the best" interchangeably. This is intentional, as true masters excel in their respective fields. The more skilled you become, the wider your reach, and the more people you can claim to be the best for.
If you’re still pondering, “Why should I strive to be the best?” consider both practical and more profound, personal reasons behind this pursuit.
Section 1.1: Practical Motivations for Striving for the Best
There are several practical motivations for aiming for excellence, including:
- Distinguishing yourself from competitors
- Building wealth
Let’s delve deeper into these points:
Stand Out from the Competition
The advancements of technology have connected us more than ever, but they have also saturated numerous fields, resulting in fierce competition. If you aspire to be the best, you will stand out amidst the crowd. Entrepreneur and investor Naval Ravikant emphasizes that the most effective way to excel is to embrace your authentic self:
“No one can compete with you on being you. Most of life is a search for who and what needs you the most.” — Eric Jorgenson, The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness
Competence is essential for mastery; however, simply being yourself is what truly sets you apart. But remember, knowing who you are requires effort. Ravikant discusses the idea of "specific knowledge"—the unique insights or passions you possess that others cannot replicate.
To identify this, consider Robert Greene's advice to reflect on your childhood:
“You have an inner force that guides you toward your Life's Task, which aligns with your natural inclinations and ignites a deep curiosity.” — Robert Greene, Mastery
For instance, when I reflected on my childhood interests, such as storytelling and music, I realized that my passion for creation was my "specific knowledge." This discovery led me to pursue writing and music composition—activities that I can engage in for hours.
This is how you truly stand out—by becoming the best version of yourself.
Accumulate Wealth
How many of your life's challenges could be alleviated with financial resources? While money isn't everything, it certainly plays a crucial role in achieving your dreams. Striving for excellence not only helps you stand out but also enables you to build wealth.
“Technology democratizes consumption but consolidates production. The best person in the world for anything gets to do it for everyone.” — Naval Ravikant
Everyone consumes, but it’s only the best who create products or services that people truly want. If your goal is to earn money from your passions, mediocrity will not lead you to wealth. True wealth allows you to earn money even while you sleep, and it is only the top performers who can achieve this.
“Scarcity makes being at the top worth something. Anyone who is going to hire you, buy from you, or recommend you will wonder if you’re the best choice.” — Seth Godin, The Dip
Section 1.2: The Spiritual Significance of Mastery
Pursuing mastery isn’t solely practical; it can also be incredibly fulfilling. Your worldview shifts, and leading an exceptional life can bring profound meaning.
Being Happy
“Let us call this sensation mastery—the feeling that we have greater command over reality, others, and ourselves.” — Robert Greene
Isn’t it your desire to excel in your endeavors? Wouldn’t you prefer to find ease in your pursuits—not through shortcuts but through dedicated effort? The joy of witnessing your transformation and accomplishing long-held aspirations is unparalleled.
Living at the edge of your potential fosters happiness and progress.
“Progress equals happiness. Even if you’re not where you want to be yet, if you’re on the journey, improving and making strides, you will feel alive.” — Tony Robbins
If you agree that progress leads to happiness, why wouldn't pursuing mastery bring you fulfillment?
The Betterment of the World
Striving for excellence doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your current circumstances. You can be content while still pursuing growth.
Consider whether your present situation is genuinely what you desire. Does it ignite your passion and give your life purpose? Or are you settling for less?
“Your playing small does not serve the world…We are all meant to shine, just as children do.” — Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles"
Neglecting your grand aspirations harms both your well-being and the world around you. By not pursuing your potential, you overlook the immense value you could offer to others.
“The passive ironic attitude is not cool or romantic; it is, in fact, destructive. As a Master in the modern world, you exemplify what can be achieved.” — Robert Greene, Mastery
If society were filled with individuals who lacked purpose, hope would dwindle.
Final Thoughts on Quitting
Choosing to be average equates to giving up.
“Average feels safe, but it's not. It’s invisible, the path of least resistance. The temptation to be average is another form of quitting—one to be avoided. You deserve better than that.” — Seth Godin, The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit
You must decide: either aim for excellence or quit entirely. Don’t waste precious time languishing in mediocrity.
TL;DR? Strive for the best. Seek mastery and aim high. The practical benefits include distinguishing yourself and building genuine wealth, while the deeper reasons involve leading a joyful and purposeful life that contributes to the greater good.
