He graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in computer science and subsequently joined Webex, which was acquired by Cisco Systems, where he advanced to the role of engineering director.

Challenges at Cisco and the Birth of Zoom

In 2011, Yuan made the bold decision to leave Cisco, launching the first version of Zoom the following year. Although initial adoption was slow and met with skepticism from his wife, who doubted his risky choices, a pivotal version released in 2013 allowed free video calls for up to 100 participants, causing a surge in popularity.
By April 2019, Zoom made its public debut on Nasdaq, with shares skyrocketing on the first trading day. As the world shifted to remote work during the pandemic, Zoom's user base expanded dramatically, solidifying its status as one of Silicon Valley's most valuable startups, valued at over $48 billion.

Despite his success, Yuan remains grounded and committed to his roots. In 2018, he donated $30 million to Santa Clara University to provide scholarships for Chinese students, reflecting his dedication to helping others achieve their dreams.
