For those who have engaged in lengthy discussions with me, my fondness for Windows Phone is a well-known sentiment. Beyond the beloved software of that short-lived platform, there was an undeniable boldness in the design of Windows phones. These devices distinguished themselves with their unique aesthetics and vibrant colors. The Nokia Lumia 1520 boasted a striking fire-engine red, while the HTC 8X flaunted a rich, deep bluish-purple. We also had the iconic taxi cab yellow of the Lumia 1020 and the lively lime green of the Lumia 930. These colors made statements, much like the operating system they operated on.
In that period, other manufacturers took note and followed suit. HTC (U11) and LG (G8) offered brilliant red options, while devices like the Honor 8 and Google Pixel showcased captivating blue tones. Even Apple, ZTE, and HTC flirted with gold. However, as I now examine the color choices for Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, I can’t help but feel that the available options—Green, Phantom Black, Lavender, and Cream—lack vibrancy. They seem to play it safe, a trend that is echoed by brands like Google, OnePlus, and Apple, all of which have shifted from lively colors to more subdued tones, diminishing the excitement in the smartphone market.
The Shift to Neutral Tones
As smartphones have evolved, many features have been sacrificed in favor of a minimalist design philosophy. We’ve seen the disappearance of removable batteries in pursuit of slimmer profiles, and now, microSD and SIM card slots are on the chopping block, potentially paving the way for the elimination of charging ports. The tech industry has been obsessed with minimalism for years, with the smartphone sector adhering to this trend more than any other.
Often, when useful ports are removed, we hear grand claims about simplicity and elegance. Yet, the reality is that practical features have been sacrificed for aesthetic appeal. This mentality has also permeated color choices for smartphones. At some point, bright colors have been deemed juvenile, while more “serious” flagship devices are draped in monotonous grays and muted shades of blue and green.
This phenomenon is evident in iPhone models; the premium Pro versions come in standard gray, white, and understated gold, while the more affordable iPhone models feature slightly more colorful but still muted options, signaling their budget status. When the Google Pixel was first introduced as a refreshing alternative to the Nexus line, it had a vibrant blue variant, but subsequent releases lost that adventurous spirit. Samsung, which once offered bold hues in the Galaxy S9, S10, and S20 series, has conformed to the notion that expensive phones must come in subdued colors, as seen with the S20 Ultra’s gray and black selections.

Manufacturers have adapted to this trend; Samsung’s latest S23 and Z Flip series feature colorful cases, while Google previously introduced fabric cases that brought life to otherwise bland Pixel devices. This approach permits consumers to express themselves through their choice of cases, albeit with a cautious strategy from manufacturers who avoid taking risks with bold colors.

Smartphones today seem to follow a repetitive design formula: a sleek slab with an aluminum frame and two glass panels in understated tones. This scenario mirrors the PC landscape before the introduction of the iMac G3, which redefined the concept of computer aesthetics. Our phones deserve a fresh approach—an innovative company that can deliver high-end devices that also embrace fun colors. While nostalgia plays a part in our longing for more vibrant devices, it also stems from the recognition that phone makers once dared to be bold. Nowadays, many Android manufacturers seem intent on replicating the iPhone, resulting in devices that blend into a sea of muted tones. If we desire smartphones to regain their sense of fun and excitement, a great starting point would be to reintroduce adventurous colors.
